To the far west of Tibet after travelling the high plateau of western Tibet for roughly 3 days, there is the vast, remote and very thinly populated Ngari Prefecture. At an average altitude of 4,500 m, Ngari is one of the driest and windiest places you will travel. Ngari tours probably are the longest itineraries all of Tibet tours (the shortest being 14 days), travellers of all kinds come to visit and trek around the world famous Mt. Kailash kora trek. Historically, Zhang-Zhung, the earliest known Tibetan civilisation, is also located in Ngari, Zhang-Zhung culture still has a huge influence in modern day-to-day lives of millions of Tibetans across the globe.
The top three destinations in Ngari are Mt. Kailash, Lake Manasarovar and Guge Kingdom ruins, there are smaller sites around these. Mt. Kailash and Lake Manasarovar are most commonly visited by worshippers and trekkers, even if your visit to Tibet concern neither of them, the ride along Changthang (the Great Plain) and its wild and awesome nature is all worth the long trip. Lake Manasarovar before reaching Mt. Kailash is truly a sight for sore eyes, after your long drive through the Changthang plateau.
Info before Travel
It will be a very long drive to Mt. Kailash or Ngari prefecture with a distance coverage around 1000km. Due to the remoteness of the location, the hotels, guest-houses, restaurants and shops are limited and not a great one. With this condition, it will be possible for Tibet Travelers to face stomach, altitude, sun-burn problems. Therefore, it is always recommend to prepare everything before you depart from Lhasa or Shigatse. Suns-cream, sun-cap & sun- glasses are required to travel in this region.
